Monterey, CA Free Thanksgiving Meal Served To 2,400 At Monterey Fairgrounds
by Richard Kuehn on 11/23/12
I
wrote yesterday on my blog about a number of free dinners being put on for
Thanksgiving across Monterey County. I'm
happy to report that the event at Monterey
Fairgrounds was a huge success.
About 2,400 people were served at the 42nd annual event sponsored
by the Kiwanis Club of Monterey where all 150 turkeys, more than 600 pounds of
potatoes and 75 bags of bread were all eaten.
Contrary to popular believe, the event is not just for homeless
people. "You could have people from
Pebble Beach sit down and give a $500 donation, and someone from Seaside who
doesn't want to eat alone," said Peterson Conway, who has attended the
event for 17 years. The gathering also
attracted 250 volunteers. I applaud
these people who gave of their time and money.
It's tough to keep a large-scale non-profit like this going for so many
years. If you are fortunate to have a
hot meal on the table and can also afford to help others, please click on the
donate button above or go to the Monterey County Gives web site, click on
the Donate Now tab and choose Hands To Help Seniors. They have chosen a number of charities which
will receive matching funds, and we are proud to say we not only were chosen,
we are in second place in fundraising this year. Your donation can go much further by visiting
their web site.
Please note that this blog reflects my personal opinion and may or may not reflect the opinion of Hands To Help Seniors and the individual members comprising the Board of Governors.
