Monterey, CA December Could Be A Tough Month For Non-Profits

by Richard Kuehn on 11/27/12

View From A Non-Profit Serving Carmel, Carmel Valley, Gonzalez, Greenfield, King City, Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Salinas, Seaside And Soledad California Analysts are predicting that December won't bring much cheer to non-profits.  The impact of Sandy, the national election and the potential to fall off of a fiscal cliff is expected to leave people with tighter pocketbooks this December, a critical month for non-profits.  It is estimated that 30% of all giving occurs in December, with 10% in the last two days of the year.  The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University estimates that charitable giving was up 4% in 2011, with individuals giving $217 billion, up $6 billion from $209 billion in 2010.  Total giving, including foundations and corporations was $298 billion in 2011, well off of the peak of $311 billion in 2007.  "A little less than two years out from the end of the Great Recession, we're starting to see charitable giving increase modestly each year," Geoffrey Brown, executive director of the Giving USA Foundation, told USA Today.  One possible benefit for next year is the fact that taxes are almost certain to go up significantly for the wealthy.  An increase has already been voted in for California and will likely pass at the Federal level next year.  Hopefully, this will cause some of the wealthiest to give more next year to reduce their tax bill.  This is a very difficult time for non-profits to raise money.  I am proud that we were chosen by Monterey County Weekly as one of the charities highlighted in their annual Monterey County Gives program.  If you can afford to give, please donate via the below web site as there are matching funds available via this great program.  The way it works is, there is $100,000 in matching funds, and it will be divided pro-rata amongst the participating organizations based on how much they raise.  So please help us stay in the top ten fundraisers by clicking here.

About Richard Kuehn & Hands to Help Seniors:

After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member, it became clear to me that there are many seniors that can't afford to pay for a private duty caregiver, not to mention medical expenses, food and property taxes on their home.  I decided to form a non-profit to help seniors with any service they might need to get by, should they be unable to afford this themselves.  From putting on a new roof to providing a hot meal, Hands to Help Seniors is there to help.  Please visit my blog where I talk about important senior issues at:
