Our two platinum sponsors, Family inHome Caregiving and Alliance Home Health always stress to their patients to eat a healthy diet, get plenty of social stimulation and exercise as much as the patient is able to. A new study released by UCLA researcher Cyrus Raji emphasizes the many benefits of this. In the study, 876 adults aged 69-95 were studied and it was found that those who burned the most calories had 5% more grey matter in the brain. Physical activities which helped included swimming, hiking, aerobics, jogging, tennis, racquetball, walking, gardening, mowing, raking, golfing, bicycling, dancing, calisthenics and riding on an exercise bike. Those in the top 25% for physical activities burned off 3,434 calories a week compared to only 348 calories for those in the bottom 25%. It takes about 110 minutes to walk off 560 calories. If you are unable to do strenuous exercise, even short walks can help. If you're able, a good way to build endurance is to go up and down staircases. It's good to know that exercise can not only help the body stay in good shape, but the mind as well.
