Tomorrow is #GivingTuesday, a national campaign which is run each year the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to encourage people to give to charity.  It's backed by major companies like Microsoft and Sony and was a huge success last year, with online giving up 50% the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.  Paypal mobile donations were 487% higher than the previous year.  There are now 7,500 nonprofits participating in this great event.  We hope you will support us and help us help seniors by making a donation to Hands to Help Seniors, and at this time we are participating in a matching funds program.  We have been chosen by the Community Foundation to participate in a matching funds program called Birdies for Charity, which is done in conjunction with the AT&T Pro Am golf tournament.  This will occur between February 6-9, 2014.  You can help in one of two ways.  You can pledge an amount "per birdie".  For example, if 1,800 birdies are made during the tournament, you would be committed to contribute $18.  This past year, 1,823 birdies were made.  In addition, you can make a cash donation at the following web site:

This year, the Community Foundation has a contest called the Chevron Shoot-Out Qualifier.  If we are able to raise $1,000 by December 31 from 15 different donors, we have a shot at getting a $50,000 bonus.  Please help us meet this goal by donating $20 or more at the previously mentioned website.

Hands to Help Seniors is a unique nonprofit on the Monterey Peninsula which helps senior citizens facing a one-time financial crisis.  Some of our recent accomplishments and clients we are working with include:

Client 1 lives in Salinas.  She is very poor and has her rent paid by her church as well as some of her food and other expenses.  However, she needs some dental work done and cannot afford this.  Hands to Help Seniors plans to help her with this one-time cost of getting her dental work done.

Client 2 lives in Carmel Valley and her porch was collapsing which endangered her safety.  We have hired a licensed contract to make her home stable and safe again.

Client 3 lives in Salinas and we helped her get her dentures replaced.  This client was sent to us via Legal Services for Seniors.  She lives alone and had been trying to have her dentures replaced due to a hospital losing them and not agreeing to replace them.  She had lost 30 pounds because she had a hard time eating without her dentures.  She is now recovered, thanks to Hands to Help Seniors.

About Richard Kuehn And Hands to Help Seniors:

After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member, it became clear to me that there are many seniors that can't afford to pay for a private duty caregiver, not to mention medical expenses, food and property taxes on their home.  I decided to form a non-profit to help seniors with any service they might need to get by, should they be unable to afford this themselves.  From putting on a new roof to providing a hot meal, Hands to Help Seniors is there to help.  Please visit my blog where I talk about important senior issues at:

Salinas, CA Alliance On Aging Looking For Volunteers

The Alliance on Aging is looking for volunteers to help it with its Senior Outreach Luncheons, which are held at St. Ansgar's Church at 72 East Joaquin Street in Salinas.  The next one will be held on December 3.  The church holds various luncheons and dinners, and it's a great way for seniors to get out of the house and get social stimulation.  The luncheon is just $7 which includes lunch, dessert and a choice of a beverage.  If you are interested in helping with this lunch, the time commitment would be for about three to four hours on the first Tuesday of each month.  If you would like to help, please call Teresa Sullivan or Michelle Lopez at 655-1334.  The Alliance on Aging is a great organization which helps seniors with a number of matters including tax preparation, an ombudsman program to prevent abuse in long-term care facilities, employment training and finding a job and HICAP Medicare counseling.

Monterey, CA Affordable Housing in Pebble Beach A No Go

by Richard Kuehn on 11/29/13

Neighbors who live in close vicinity to the location where the Pebble Beach Company was going to build affordable housing units appear to have won the battle of getting the project cancelled.  The Pacific Grove City Council has unanimously voted to take the side of residents in the Del Monte Park area and oppose the new project.  "We are concerned that the project will have a harmful impact upon a significant number of our citizens," council members Ken Cuneo and Dan Miller wrote to the Pebble Beach Company.   The letter is also being sent to the Monterey County Board of Supervisors and the county planning commission.  The units were going to be built as part of the last development in the Del Monte Forest, which includes a new resort and spa.  However, given all of the uproar by Pebble Beach residents, the 24-unit apartment complex will likely be built somewhere else in Monterey County.

Monterey, CA 38% Of Low Income Monterey County Residents Don't Have An Adequate Diet

by Richard Kuehn on 11/24/13

There was a sad story in the Monterey Herald entitled "Thousands in county struggle to buy food."  Unfortunately, it's true.  We hear from senior citizens all of the time who are struggling to get by.  The cost of day-to-day living is going up faster than Social Security, which is supposed to rise only 1.5% next year.  "If your Pacific Gas & Electric Company bill goes up because it's cold out, or your prescription drug prices go up, you have nothing left for food," Joe Splane, a board member at the Food Bank for Monterey County, told the paper.  A survey by UCLA which was released last week found that there are at least 4 million Californians who couldn't consistently afford food between 2011 and 2012, not surprising given the high unemployment rate including the huge number of baby boomers who have been laid off and haven't been able to find a new job.  Roughly 38% of low-income Monterey County residents do not have access to a regular diet, according to the UCLA Survey.  Sadly, there is a bill before the Senate which would cut $4 billion from the food stamp program (CalFresh SNAP or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).  Although that's a fraction of the $40 billion that the House of Representatives proposed cutting, it's still a lot of food that will not be going into the mouths of Americans.
