A number of
nonprofits are up in arms about a bill which is set to be voted on by the House
of Representatives which would gut $40 billion out of the food stamps program
(now known as CalFresh SNAP or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)
over the next decade. Private
organizations,
most of which are nonprofits like Dorothy's Place in Salinas, complain that
this simply shifts more of the burden onto them. These people have got to get their food from
somewhere. "We have no ability to
make up for these cuts, Margarette Purvis, president & CEO of the Food Bank
of New York, told a reporter. Almost 48
million people in 23 million households are now using SNAP. What are they to do? The Congressional Budget Office estimates
that under the new rules, 6 million low income residents would be cut from the
program. What a huge amount of stress
this will place on food banks and other great organizations feeding the poor.
