Affordable housing on the Monterey Peninsula
is difficult to find, particularly for senior citizens on a fixed income. It was great to read
that
the Monterey City Council has agreed to hire a construction manager to oversee
completion of 18 affordable apartments in the expanded Monterey Hotel on
Alvarado Street. This would be an
excellent place for a senior without transportation because Trader Joes, a
number of restaurants, Ordway drug store and numerous coffee shops are all
within a very short walking distance.
That's important as you age and lose mobility. The units have been mired in problems after
the project went into receivership and the developer changed their mind and
decided they no longer wanted to put in affordable
housing units. The city council in July
put it out for bid again and, after receiving eight responses, hired someone
else. The units are expected to be
completed within a year and seniors will applaud having more affordable housing
options.
About
Richard Kuehn & Hands to Help Seniors:
After more than a decade of caregiving, both
in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member, it became
clear to me that there are many seniors that can't afford to pay for a private
duty caregiver, not to mention medical expenses, food and property taxes on
their home. I decided to form a non-profit to help seniors with any
service they might need to get by, should they be unable to afford this
themselves. From putting on a new roof to providing a hot meal, Hands to
Help Seniors is there to help. Please visit my blog where I talk about
important senior issues at:
