Spreckels, CA Dorothy's Place Gets A New Fence Thanks To Boy Scout Troop #60
by Richard Kuehn on 01/23/13
I was happy to read that the Spreckels
Boy Scouts Troop #60 has been pitching in a number of hands to replace the
fence at Dorothy's Place, a great non-profit in Salinas which gives a meal and
a warm place to sleep to a number of senior citizens. The fence will be done by the end of the
month and the Scouts Troop also cut up the old fence and turned it into
firewood for the Franciscan Workers. I wrote last year about some of the
financial woes Dorothy's Place was having, with a cash crunch of $50,000 needed
to upgrade its kitchen. I am glad they
were able to make it through this crisis.
They are getting about 100 additional people
coming in each day following the recession and those in need of a place to
sleep had almost doubled last year. Many
of the overnighters are elderly women who, because of their age and
disabilities, are unable to acquire subsidized housing. I've written before on my blog that Monterey
County is one of the most expensive places in California for a Senior to
live. Even with Social Security, many
can't get by. Thanks so much to a number
of great members of the business community including Ace Hardware on South Main
Street, Home Depot, Orchard Supply Hardware and Pro-Build for donating the
materials to help with this worthwhile project.
