The holiday season is often a time of year when families get together, share a good meal and enjoy each other's company. But given how spread out many families have become, it's also important that you share other important information about your life with relatives while you have the chance. "It's a perfect time to not only visit but also learn about our family health history," Surgeon General Regina Benjamin told USA Today. Her office offers a free online tool which families can use to organize and print health histories and compile this so that health care providers have access to it. You may want to ask family members about the history their parents and grandparents had with heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer and any other serious diseases. But don't stop there. Ask them at what age the disease came on, how it progressed, and any other information which a doctor might find important. For more information please take a look at My Family Health Portrait which is available at www.familyhistory.hhs.gov.
