The Labor Department recently announced that the percentage of workers over the traditional retirement age of 65 has hit a record high . Part of this is due to the fact that men under 55 lost jobs at a very high rate and they are only now starting to recover. Simply put, they can't afford to retire. David Rosenberg, the chief economist at Gluskin Sheff, said that overall, househould net worth was 15 percent lower than at the prerecession peak. For the first time since the government began keeping track of the numbers in 1981 (and possibly for the first time ever) one in nine American men over the age of 75 was working. For women it was one in twenty. At Hands to Help Seniors, we see people from all walks of life, but the underlying theme is that life in their golden years didn't turn out as they expected it would. Some are distraught, unable to pay for medical bills, house upkeep and other important items. It's a bleak situation when you are over 75 years old and having to work in order to buy groceries and pay the electric bill.
