I was happy to read a
story in AARP Bulletin about a new nonprofit started by former U.S. Senator Elizabeth
Dole (and wife of one time presidential nominee former Kansas Senator Bob Dole)
Caring for
Military Families. "People just
aren't aware of their needs," she said.
As the former head of the American Red Cross, she understands the impact
a major nonprofit can have and she started this one to raise public awareness
of caregivers' needs. "In most
cases, they are unnoticed because they have hidden heroes," she told an
interviewer with Fox News. As both of
our Platinum sponsors, Alliance Home Health and Family inHome Caregiving, see
every day, the family members struggling to care for a loved one with a
debilitating condition often get run down and depressed. It's hard work taking care of someone who is
disabled, and many family caregivers swap out times with different family
members so that they can work full time, and then come home and work full time
caring for their loved one. They become
exhausted and in need of respite. I
applaud Mrs. Dole's efforts to try and help the family caregivers which serve veterans.
They are estimated to number 1 million Americans.
