Staying healthy and happy has a lot
to do with environment, and a recent paper published
this week in the journal Science adds additional
evidence to this argument. The paper
analyzed the impact of a federal housing program called Moving to Opportunity
which gave housing vouchers to more than 2,000 low income families so they could
move out of impoverished neighborhoods into better housing. It found that although the move did not help
them escape poverty, they ended up with lower rates of diabetes, extreme
obesity and anxiety and stress. With all
eyes on the economy now, it's difficult to gauge how to help people which are
struggling to get by. With draconian
cuts in many social programs at both the state and federal levels, it is
becoming increasingly difficult to do more with less.
