I
wrote yesterday on my blog about the importance of checking out the financial
records of charities before you give to them.
There is a plethora of information which non-profits must make available
to the public via Form 990 filings with the I.R.S. Unfortunately, not all non-profits are
founded entirely to serve the public.
Some have the self interest of management at the forefront of their
thinking. The front page of the New
York Times today profiled The Kintock Group, a large non-profit operator of
halfway houses which has paid its founder over $7 million in pay and benefits
over the last decade. His daughter,
brother-in-law and son-in-law received $2.5 million during the same
period. The non-profit hired the
brother-in-law as a consultant even though he has no experience in the industry. It also hired the son-in-law who was hired to
duplicate DVDs and other electronic media.
Organizations like this give a bad name to non-profits across the
country. I urge you to check out the
charities you are giving your hard earned money to. At Hands To Help Seniors, we have no paid
staff members. All of the work is done
by volunteers. We have almost no
overhead other than postage and supplies and the cost of putting on our annual
fundraising event. Our mission is to
give donations we receive back to the neediest seniors and adults with
disabilities in Monterey County. If you
would like to support our mission, we are currently doing a fundraising
campaign. I am proud that we were chosen
by Monterey County Weekly as one of the charities highlighted in their annual
Monterey County Gives program. If you
can afford to give, please donate via the below web site as there are matching
funds available via this great program.
The way it works is, there is $100,000 in matching funds and it will be
divided pro-rata amongst the participating organizations based on how much they
raise. So please help us stay in the top
fundraisers by clicking here.
Please note that this blog reflects my personal opinion and may or may not reflect the opinion of Hands To Help Seniors and the individual members comprising the Board of Governors.
