The Pebble Beach
Company's plan to do a massive expansion in the Del Monte Forest continues to draw heat, particularly on the
affordable housing front. Anyone who
lives on the Monterey Peninsula knows that affordable housing units are few and
far between. They tend to have long
waiting lists and are hard to get into.
As part of the approval of the new resort, spa and other facilities, the
Pebble Beach Company is also required to build affordable housing. It plans to build a 24-unit structure of
townhouses on Congress Road near S.F.B. Morse Drive which will be affordable
housing. However, in order to build on
this 2.5 acre parcel, 716 trees are going to need to be cut down. The fact that the Pebble Beach Company has
set aside 635 acres of the forest as conserved land is not enough to quiet
critics. I hope the Pebble Beach Company
wins on this point. If it doesn't, it
will probably negotiate to build the units outside of the Pebble Beach area,
which would be unfortunate.
