Monterey, CA : Clinics Helping The Poor Fall Short In A Number Of Areas

Monterey, CA : Clinics Helping The Poor Fall Short In A Number Of Areas :  View From A Non-Profit Serving Carmel, Carmel Valley, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Gonzalez, Greenfield, King City, Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Salinas, Seaside And Soledad California

A new study found that hundreds of the 1,200 community health centers, which serve millions of our poor, are falling short on key measures such as keeping diabetes under control for its patients.  That's a sad commentary on how we treat the impoverished which have nowhere else to go.  These clinics served 20 million people last year, double the number they served a decade ago.  An analysis by USA Today found the following results:

. Thankfully, clinics in California, along with those in the Mid-West and New England fared better than those in the South.

. Almost 75% of the centers performed significantly worst in screening for cervical cancer than the national average.

.  About 73% performed significantly below average in maintaining diabetics' blood sugar.

.  Roughly 28% performed significantly below average for immunizing 2 year olds.

Hopefully this report will call attention to a big issue we are facing in the medical industry.  However, with so many budget cuts being made at both the state and federal levels, many clinics will have a hard time bringing things up to par given they are unlikely to get more funds.

About Richard Kuehn & Hands to Help Seniors:

After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member, it became clear to me that there are many seniors that can't afford to pay for a private duty caregiver, not to mention medical expenses, food and property taxes on their home.  I decided to form a non-profit to help seniors with any service they might need to get by, should they be unable to afford this themselves.  From putting on a new roof to providing a hot meal, Hands to Help Seniors is there to help.  Please visit my blog where I talk about important senior issues at:
